On 14 May 1879, the "Leonidas", the ship with the first
indentured labourers from
India, arrived in Fiji.

In 2004,
people in Fiji were
celebrating 125 years of the arrival of
these first 'girmitiyas'.
This site is dedicated to the endurance and the
struggles of
those people who specifically helped to build the sugar industry here in the Fiji Islands.
What started as a
pure celebration site has now developed into probably
the most extensive collection of information about the
Girmit era in Fiji (some people even write on
dissertations using our material). Click
