"125th ANNIVERSARY OF GIRMIT" CELEBRATIONS -
SUVA
The General Public, Ratepayers and Citizens
of greater Suva area are informed that Suva City Council in
conjunction with Fiji Girmit Council will be celebrating the
"125th Anniversary of Girmit" from 10th to 14th May
2004.
An exhibition will be held at the Lower Hall
at Civic Centre from 10th to 14th May, 2004. The function will
end on 14th May 2004 with a multicultural night at the Suva
Civic Auditorium.
All are requested to support this events.
You could also assist by lending whatever items you have such
as historical photos, artifacts, musical instruments,
jewellery, clothing, equipment etc. which are linked to Girmit
for displays in commemoration of our first Girmityas
(indentured labourers) in Fiji in 1879. These items will be
displayed at the Lower Hall for public viewing free of charge.
We request that these items to reach Council on or before 4th
May 2004 and will be returned to you immediately after the
exhibition.
You are also informed that a march
processions schedules for 14 May, 2004 at 10.30am commencing
from Rodwell Road, Scott Street, Victoria Parade and ending at
Civic Centre. We request public support and would be pleased
to accommodate those who are willing to take part in the
march.
